The city of Emporiae was already an old settlement by the town it fell under Roman control. Since the 6 century BC Greeks had settled there, calling it Emporion. Julius Caesar expanded the town significantly, settling many of his veterans there. However Emporiae eventually declined and by the third century AD it had been completely abandoned.
Today it is a major archaeological site which even boasts patterned mosaic floors within some of the ruined buildings as well as a harbour wall from the 1st century BC.
